Monte Rosa Hotel Zermatt

Michel Reybier Hospitality is one of Switzerland's most renowned luxury hotel groups, with several properties in Zermatt right at the foot of the Matterhorn. The Monte Rosa Hotel is a special one among them: opened in 1855 by Alexander Seiler, it's considered Zermatt's oldest hotel and the cradle of alpine mountaineering tourism.

From here, Edward Whymper set off in 1865 for the first ascent of the Matterhorn — the mountain that still defines Zermatt today. I got to capture this piece of hotel history in photographs, from the historic rooms to the details that speak of more than 170 years of hospitality.
